What causes black marks on wooden worktops?

Black marks on wooden worktops are caused by either water or metal damage. Some types of timbers; Oak for example contain higher levels of tannic acid and there is a chemical reaction between the wood and metals. The only way to remove these black marks on a worktop is to sand them out.

Why is my wooden worktop sticky?

A wooden worktop becomes sticky for 2 main reasons, either an over-application of danish oil or the danish oil is old and the dryers have evaporated. When using danish oil or worktop oils ensure all excess is removed speedily and they are relatively fresh. You may be able to remove the sticky mess with lots of rags and spirits but it will take hours, we just buzz it off with a belt sander.

What are the average costs and how long does it take?

Prices vary depending on the extent of the damage and the area of the worktop but as a rough guide.

  • Sanding a small worktop- £320 - 8 hours

  • Sanding a large worktop - £600 - 16 hours

What Materials are used?

Our restoration process involves us using only the highest quality Japanese and Finnish sanding power tools. These sanders are necessary and include heavy-weight belt sanders and random orbital sanders with dust extraction attachments. Good quality sandpaper, wood finish, brushes, rags and cleaning solvent.

Belt sanders are used for the main brunt of the work. It easily removes heavily stained areas and surfaces with an overly thick layer or sticky coatings.

The orbital sanders are used to smooth out the heavily scored lines that the belt sander creates and provides an amazingly smooth finish that will catch the eye when finished.

Quality sanding disks and belts are essential to the restoration process, cheap items gum up quickly and tear. Cheap sandpaper prevents the surface from being sanded down and takes much more time to finish.

A dust extractor or shop vac is a vital piece in the item list, it picks up all the free-flowing particles that would otherwise blow around the kitchen. Hardwood dust is very fine and gets everywhere air can travel, it can take weeks to clear up the dust cloud.

Our wood finishes and sealers are made from the finest natural plant-based products manufactured in the UK, and are well-known and tested. Our finishes are child safe, antimicrobial and extremely durable.

Rags and Brushes need to be lint free, no-loss and bristleless to get that great brush strokeless look that a professional finish gives.

These are all required to achieve that perfect long-lasting finish so many want from their timber surfaces and will last many years before needing to be resealed or maintained.

Is sanding worktops noisy?

Yes, it can be a little noisy, whilst the worktops are being sanded the dust extractor must be running, this can get noisy especially when the belt sander is running. Most don’t mind the noise level in the next room with the door closed. The easiest way to describe the noise level would be an early 90’s vacuum cleaner. As many people are working from home it is a valid question.

Are worktop finishes safe?

Our wood finishes are antibacterial, food-safe and child-safe after fully curing which should be complete within 24 hours.

Certified safe for use on children’s toys: DIN 53160 EN 71-3

Antibacterial properties tested using standard JIS Z 2801:2000

Will sanding worktops create dust?

Our sander dust extraction system collects 99% of the free-flowing dust. If there is any dust created it would be minimal and would be comparable to a week’s worth of dusting in an average family home.

What can I Clean my wood worktops with?

You can use an anti-bacterial spray explicitly made for use on kitchen countertops as a daily cleanser. Maintenance sprays are safe and advised to be used at least once a week. Wood cleaners made by companies such as Osmo, Fiddes and Woca are antibacterial and contain natural oils that replenish and protect the timber.

Can I sand my own worktops?

Of course, you can sand your own worktops but it will be a choice of spending a great deal of money (roughly £900) and sanding your own. Or doing it cheap and ending up with a mediocre finish that will need redoing. I guess it also depends on whether the person doing it is skilled in sanding and finishing timber. You could spend £900 and still end up with a mediocre finish, the choice or gamble is yours.
